The HKFAA organized a super fun Kin-Ball experience event on December 11, 2023, and it was truly fantastic! On the field, we heard continuous laughter from our members and our guests from Hong Kong Assitant Directors Association. Seeing everyone's smiles, full-speed running, and the passion for catching the ball, we could feel that everyone was letting go of work pressure and enjoying the joy of sports.

Kin-Ball is a emerging sport in Hong Kong in recent years, originating from Canada. It is also the only team sport in the world where three teams compete simultaneously. This sport not only requires the use of the entire body's muscles but also demands agile reaction capabilities. The unique format of three-team competition emphasizes tactical planning and on-the-spot flexibility, allowing us to experience the core values of "respect, inclusiveness, and team spirit" in the game. The motto "Learn and try new things" perfectly demonstrated the characteristic of filmmakers daring to try new things in this activity!

This time, we invited professional coach Grace to join our event, providing us with professional guidance. With Grace's many years of experience in Kin-Ball coaching, she led us to understand the techniques and tactics of Kin-Ball, making our experience even more exciting!

It was a truly wonderful experience, and some members have already inquired about the possibility of hosting Kin-Ball events again. The enthusiasm and satisfaction of everyone towards Kin-Ball are really high and we look forward to organizing more similar experiential activities in the future. Hopefully, more members can attend next time and enjoy the fun and new experiences brought by the activity together!

"Out of Thin Air" mission accomplished! The "Out of Thin Air: Hong Kong Film Art and Costume Design Exhibition”, jointly organized by the Hong Kong Film Arts Association and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, opened on 3/5/2023 and is closing tonight at 6:00 PM after four months, on 4/9/2023!

Since the opening, the total number of visitors has reached 69,891!!! Some visitors have come not just once, twice, or thrice; today we were amazed to learn that one audience has visited the exhibition seven times! We are deeply moved! Thank you!

Both online and offline media have shown great interest in this exhibition. They started covering it well before the opening and continued to report on it until the end of August. It's quite unusual, and we are very thankful for the strong support from our media friends!

Throughout the exhibition period, our four curators - Chairman Man Lim Chung, Vice Chairlady Tina Liu, Executive Committee Member Jean Tsoi, and founding member Edith Cheung, have been tirelessly busy with interviews and recordings. Additionally, together with the two Vice Chairmen, Bill Lui and Alex Mok, and Secretary Ceci Fok, they have jointly conducted more than 70 guided tours, numerous lectures, post-screening discussions, and workshops. It's been quite hectic. We joked that even though we are all experienced filmmakers, this is our first exhibition, and we thought that once the production and presentation were in place, everything would be smooth sailing. Wow! It turns out there's a lot of behind-the-scenes work and coordination involved. We're tired, but we're also very happy!

We've been preparing for "Out of Thin Air" for three and a half years, and during the exhibition, we received many appreciations and praises from everyone. For example, people have said that we put a lot of heart and enthusiasm into it, that the exhibition is very professional and creative, the content is rich and detailed, the exhibits are precious, it documents important information about the development of Hong Kong film culture, and that our dedication is truly touching. Some have even described the overall presentation as extraordinary, and the entire exhibition as a unique work of art! We've been praised for successfully showing the public the previously unknown processes and hard work behind film art and costume design. The audience is pleasantly surprised by the creativity and problem-solving skills we've used to complete film shoots. They appreciate our relentless "Can do" Hong Kong spirit, and everyone is proud of Hong Kong cinema!

Many people have left comments saying that this should be a permanent exhibition, and Hong Kong should have its own film museum! Thank you all for your appreciation and praise. Film is the art of storytelling, and we are the storytellers. Through this exhibition, we've shared the stories of art and costume design and received overwhelmingly positive responses. We can only say thank you again and again!

The story of "Out of Thin Air" is not over. It will be published in the form of a physical book, comprehensively documenting how this exhibition was conceived and developed, the curatorial process, the search for exhibits, the production process, a wealth of exhibition content and images, as well as exclusive articles and information. Whether you've visited the exhibition or not, it will allow you to immerse yourself and experience more! When will it be published? Alright, let's not say too much tonight; it's a wrap! Tomorrow morning, we will start packing up for the exhibition's closure, returning everything to its rightful place. There's work to be done, but we must sincerely thank the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and everyone for their support and friendship, without which we could not have accomplished this. HKFAA's "Insiders" members' activity, the "Alan Chan Art Collection and Creative Journey"

Our extend gratitude to the renowned designer Mr. Alan Chan for his invitation. On August 20, a group of eight participants, comprising HKFAA's committees, members, and our Future Master Class graduates, visited the exhibition "Alan Chan Collecting Inspiration For Design" at the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority Building, Phillips Asia Headquarters.

We were privileged to have Mr. Chan personally guide us through the exhibition, allowing us to appreciate his collection amassed over 50 years from all corners of the world. Collected from auction houses to flea markets, the diverse array of items included books, silverware, folding fans, toys, seals, lacquerware, boxes, Kyoto dolls, tea sets, and more, totaling over 500 pieces of collectibles and nearly 300 artworks. The exhibition is divided into three main sections: 'Joy of Collecting,' 'Joy of Creating,' and 'Joy of Curating,' featuring voice-guided tours from four of his friends: Tina Lau, Chi Chung Wong, Gigi Lam, and Vicky Leung.

The second installment of HKFAA members' activity, "Hand Moulding Pottery Class - Sake Cup," was successfully completed in August! The pottery class was led by instructor Ann from "Little Clay Studio" and took place on August 19, 2023.  A total of 8 participants attended, including members, prospective members, and our friends from The Hong Kong Assistant Directors Association.  Instructor Ann spent 3 hours teaching from basic clay kneading techniques to hand-pinching methods. Ann praised the members for quickly grasping color mixing and clay usage.

In addition to creating sake cups, members produced many creative artworks, showcasing the imaginative thinking of artists! Members expressed their joy in this activity, attributing it to the support of the HKFAA.

The "Wine Tasting & More" organized by HKFAA for its members has just successfully concluded on 25/7! A total of 18 members participated, marking the first member's activity for HKFAA in 2023. It was also the first time that members from the Hong Kong Film Assistant Directors Association were included, aiming to increase opportunities for collaboration and industry exchanges, proving to be a success!

The instructor for this event was Zoe Lee, a seasoned film art director in the industry who, in her spare time, delves into the culture of wine with extensive knowledge. Zoe shared specific insights in the class, including methods for reading wine labels, wine origins, pairing red wine with different types of glasses, and the distinctions in wine colors. Given that grape juice and apple juice are often used on film sets as substitutes for alcoholic beverages, the participants, particularly those in the art department, were curious about how to adjust the color of red and white wine to create more realistic "faux wine" and even simulate the effect of wine clinging to the glass. Everyone enthusiastically engaged in the learning process!

Each participant in the activity received a wine knowledge document meticulously prepared by Zoe Lee. Many expressed that they should have joined this interest class earlier! The enthusiastic response suggests that another session would be well-received. Who's interested? Raise your hand! Cheers!

Films are a major part of Hong Kong's popular culture. The Hong Kong films owe their success to the entire cast and crew's contribution in which the art and costume directors play an indispensable role.

This exhibition aims to document the development of film arts in Hong Kong and showcase the role and importance of art and costume design in film production. Through the display of iconic costumes, props, set designs, drawing manuscripts, paraphernalia, videos and reconstructed scenes of workshops, the exhibition will take visitors into the world behind the scenes for delving into the establishment of the Hong Kong film arts profession, and learning about the nature of the Hong Kong film culture, and the highly adaptable professionalism and creative inclusiveness of film industry workers.

The "Future Master Class," organized by the Hong Kong Film Arts Association and funded by Create Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Film Development Fund, selected thirty students from a pool of numerous applicants in early 2022. The class commenced in May of the same year. Over eight intensive months, the teaching team imparted various knowledge and creative experiences related to film art, set design, props, costumes, and makeup to the students. They also organized visits to relevant companies, studios, and organizations involved in film production.

After several shooting exercises, in December 2022, the class invited the Hong Kong Assistant Directors Association to collaborate. The association provided four scripts, assigned the role of director, and coordinated production, cinematography, lighting, and other departments. The "Future Masterclass" students were divided into four groups, each responsible for scene design, props, costumes, and makeup for one of the four short films. Shooting commenced early this year, and by the end of January, all filming was completed, marking the successful conclusion of the ten-month program.

The four films were screened on April 22nd at the Hong Kong Arts Centre Louis Koo Cinema. HKFAA Chairman Man Lim Chung presented graduation certificates during the event. On the screening day, mentors, students, directors, actors, and representatives from sponsoring organizations, totaling over a hundred people, created a lively atmosphere. The four short films were well-received, with concise storytelling, smooth cinematography, and captivating art and costumes, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience. After the screening, everyone continued to gather and engage in animated discussions, making the event a memorable one.

The Hong Kong Film Art Association's new executive committee election has just concluded successfully! After member voting, 15 members of the association have been officially elected as Executive Committee Members for the term 2023-2025. The exclusive offer for members of HKFAA, "Kanzan Flower Arrangement Class," was successfully completed on February 19, 2023, with a total of 12 members participating in the event! Tabu, the instructor from Be Tabula Rasa, carefully selected floral materials for us, paired with various elegant small flower pots, creating harmonious combinations of colors. We focused on creating the points, lines, and surfaces taught by Tabu on the flower plates. In the art of flower arrangement, there is the principle of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, using a method of non-planar arrangement with a clear hierarchy. The participating members expressed their own sense of beauty and personality, creating different levels and visual balance.

戲院，是多少人的電影萌芽地，尤其是電影人。

謝謝新世界發展Culture For Tomorrow的邀請，近日我們香港電影美術學會的執委及會員們連番參觀了正在北角皇都戲院舉行的體驗式展覧《尋找你我他的皇都》。

經歷盛衰轉型及被夷為平地的危機，擁有68年歴史的皇都戲院在拆御改建為新的文化藝術場所之前，和香港人來一回重生前的聚舊，實屬難得。

美會在21/4及3/5先後安排了兩次皇都導賞團，在有限的名額下讓執委和會員們參觀，大家事前興奮事後滿足好開心，尤其是那幾位因為最快完成續會手續而得到這份驚喜禮物的會員！

副會長Bill 雷楚雄在他的fb寫下觀後感，節錄如下。

「皇都.似水年華   四月二十一日經香港電影美術學會副會長劉天蘭安排，有幸舆美術學會會員參觀現正在北角皇都戲院現址舉行的《尋找你我他的皇都》展覽，作為學會應屆首次會員活動。皇都戲院舊址由新世界發展以47.76億元投得，承諾將盡力保留和重塑戲院的歷史面貌，把戲院昇華為「文化綠洲」，計劃在2026年完成復修。 我與皇都戲院淵源甚深，得悉立馬報名參加。是日有導賞員帶隊詳盡介紹，展覽行程約一小時餘。我在拍攝電影《南海十三郎》時，曾在停業期的皇都戲院租借場地作戲中場景，有幸走遍戲院內外，對戲院五十年代的建築結構，及內部通往樓座通道上的鐵花雕欄裝飾深留印象，尤其是戲院天台屋頂的「飛拱」桁架結構最為着迷，平時經過都會舉首凝視片刻，那是香港建築史上獨一無二的經典作品，我曾將這飛拱結構，借用在電影《千機變》的大教堂天台建築外形上，感謝新世界發展有限公司的公共事務主管Helen特別安排，此次竟可隨導賞員登上天台，實地參觀，我們雀躍萬分，在飛拱下 拍攝了許多到此一遊照片，隨後進入大堂，在售票處接過一張舊式戲票開始，展開親身體驗皇都的歷史之旅，據說此次展覽新世界機構籌備三年，介紹有關皇都戲院由璇宮戲院、「小上海」到皇都戲院的前世今生，由最初輝煌的國際級表演到中西首輪電影上映的歲月變遷。《尋找你我他的皇都》同時帶隊遊覧皇都商場，以前場內的髮型屋、唱片舖等作實物展陳，其他店舖則闢作展室，放映短片介紹及展出書枱座椅、電影海報及戲票等過百件戲院舊物。其中一處商舖對我特別有所觸動，那是中學畢業不久，我剛讀完一個週末時装設計課程，就和兩男一女三位中學好友，每人集資三千元，就在皇都商場此處，開設了一間時裝店......當日站在皇都商場舊舖前，少年的青蔥歲月驟然湧現，前塵往事在腦海中徘徊良久，我請美術學會前會長梁華生拍下我在舊舖照片一張存念，也借用了他的照片將是次行程附圖說明，紀錄了這一小時追憶皇都與我曾經的似水年華！」

另外有執委憶起七歲時在皇都戲院首看經典電影《仙樂飄飄處處聞》，之後就好好唱口地一天到晚”Doe a deer a female deer...”；有會員原來是皇都街坊，天天經過；又有人回味少年十五二十時相約皇都的甜蜜青春鏡頭.....。

Hong Kong Film Awards Association Board of Directors comprises of representatives from the affiliated associations in the film industry. HKFAA Honorary Chairman Cyrus Ho left his position as one of the Directors after serving wholeheartedly in the Board for more than 10 years. HKFAA Vice Chairman Tina Liu has become the new representative to join the Board of Directors since 2019. Along with Executive Committee Member of HKFAA Irving Cheung as an attendee of the meetings, they joined together to make contributions to the Hong Kong Film Awards.

As the planning of the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards 2020 began, Tina Liu took up the role of Visual Creative Director of Visual Creative Team, while Irving Cheung joined as Art Director. They invited Eric Kot as Visual Consultant, taking the lead to contribute to this year’s digital icon design followed by graphic design and production of the special book.

Affected by the local social movement and the pandemic, the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony could not be held, and the scheduled photo shooting session for more than 30 nominees was also forced to be cancelled. Members of the Awards’ Styling Team including Executive Committee Member of HKFAA Rex Loong, HKFAA members Erica Yip and Umi Ngai had been working hard to prepare the costumes and props for more than a month. They could only make a little sigh because of the cancellation.

With no photo shoot, a new idea crossed her mind, Visual Creative Director Tina Liu invited various local artists including Chow Chun Fai, Alex Chan, Harvey Chan, Paul Lung, Jay Lau, Siuloy and Stefunny Yeung, Ren Zhe and Song Yige to create portraits for the nominees. She also invited artist Chi Wong to create paper sculptures for 14 Directors of the Board, and also renowned photographer Sam Wong to take group photos of these sculptures. All these artworks celebrated a wonderful collaboration between the Hong Kong film industry and the arts community!

This year’s list of winners was announced by the Hong Kong Film Awards Association Chairman Mr. Derek Yee in a live webcast. Art Director Irving Cheung and member Nino Tien worked hard on the scene and props for a while.

Film industry had been almost at a standstill since early-2020 as the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe. The livelihood of many film practitioners had been badly affected by the severe Covid-19 outbreak.

In April of the same year, Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild Charity Limited and several industry professionals partnered up to launch the “Hong Kong Filmmakers Covid-19 Crisis Support Programme” with the purpose of uniting numerous film industry associations and concerned parties in order to raise funds and support the primary industry peers amidst painful struggles.

With the involvement of HKFAA executive committee members Alex Mok and Jean Choi, the organising committee of the programme was set up on 22 April 2020. Meanwhile, HKFAA members Cola Ho, Julia Lo and Erica Yip formed the HKFAA Application Liaison Group to take care of applicants who had submitted the requests through HKFAA by responding to their enquiries, verifying information and handing in the completed applications to Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers for approval.

Applications were accepted from 30 April to 10 May 2020 and a total of nearly 2,000 applications had been certified eligible to receive payments through cheques, which were distributed at the office of Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers between 31 May and 6 June 2020.

Among the successful applicants, a total of 222, including 156 HKFAA members and 66 non-members, completed their applications with the aid of HKFAA.

HKFAA’s logo was designed by Former Chairman James Leung in 1995. The design concept is to create a blank screen in a dark cinema, as if a pure white canvas, which is left to the film artists to paint it. It also tells why the screen is composed of different brushstrokes.

The logo design was then updated by Alex Mok in 2019. At the same time, a team was formed to make comprehensive improvements to the Corporate Identity System (CIS) of the Association:

1. HKFAA logo guide, envelope, letterhead, business card and membership card were designed and produced by Members Team member Cola Ho.

2. Membership Application Form was revised by Vice Chairman Tina Liu, Executive Committee members Irving Cheung, Jean Choi and Secretary Grace Yung.

3. Official website was revamped by Vice Chairman Tina Liu, Executive Committee members Irving Cheung, Jean Choi and Project Manager Dani Chong.

4. New website is launched in early Summer 2020.

Filmmaking starts from a script. From words on paper to a tangible cinematic world, everything could be created out of nothing. While the creative process can be imaginative and boundless, how can the actual work be carried out? Film art director Alex Mok was invited to share the ups and downs during the process, and his choices between creative ideas and production at the National Taiwan University of Arts.

On 14 Feb 2019, HKFAA held a spring dinner for members at Irving Cheung’s studio. We would like to express our thanks to Cheung for providing the venue for the joyful gathering.

For many years, HKFAA has been actively promoting the knowledge of film arts to the younger generation. In addition to holding previous projects including Film Arts’ Studio, Film Arts on Campus, Hong Kong Film Arts in Full Contact Certificate Programme and Cinema Chit-Chat talk series, HKFAA members were also invited to teach common classes on film arts in the 4th Film Professionals Training Programme organised by the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers.

HKFAA was invited by Hong Kong Film Development Council and CreateHK of the HKSAR Government to co-organise a new campaign called "Nova Power", which aims to promote the new generation of film actors and actresses, film costume designers and fashion designers. HKFAA Vice Chairman Tina Liu was appointed as the Project & Image Director of the campaign.

HKFAA held a welcoming party for new members at Irving Cheung’s studio in January 2018. We would like to express our thanks to Cheung for providing the venue for the joyful gathering.

In 2017, Chairman Silver Cheung was invited to design the official logo for the Hong Kong Film Assistant Directors’ Association.

“Cinema Chit-Chat: Arts。Director” has been held successfully on 2 September 2017 at The Qube, PMQ in Central! Nearly 400 members of the public and students filled the venue!

The topic of Arts。Director focused on the communications between film art directors, costume designers and directors. The talk moderator, HKFAA Vice Chairman Tina Liu, firstly introduced film arts and the division of labour. She then talked with various guest speakers including veteran film director Ann Hui, emerging director Wong Chun, new-generation art directors Cheung Siu Hong and Irving Cheung on how the film art directors, costume designers and directors study, discuss, debate and compromise in order to deal with the issues of arts in film production. They provided truly inspiring insights throughout the conversations and sharing!

In the middle session, an excerpt from a short film directed by Wong Chun was screened, and stage actors Michael Ning, Yuen Ho Yeung, Fung Tak Luk and Angel Koo presented a live performance which allowed the audience to experience the work of a film art director and a costume designer. This exceptional interactive experimental theatre performance made the event come alive and pushed the atmosphere to a climax!

In the second half of the talk, guest speaker and film director Ann Hui responded to various questions we collected from the public which were all related to the arts and styling in her films. With rich and authentic details, the audience greatly enjoyed this session.

At the end of the talk, the then-Executive Committee of HKFAA took to the stage, and Chairman Silver Cheung delivered a speech to pay tribute to Director Ann Hui on behalf of the Association. Afterwards, a 2-minute short video encapsulating the essences of Hui ’s 27 works over the past 38 years was screened. This short video served as a little gift to show our great respect to Director Hui!

HKFAA Chairman Silver Cheung presented the CD and USB with the softcopy of the short video to Director Hui, and Vice Chairman Tina Liu presented a bouquet to her. The event came to a successful conclusion after the group photo-taking session.

In 2016, Vice Chairman Alex Mok was invited to design the official trophy for the Hong Kong Screenwriters’ Guild.

“Cinema Chit-Chat – On Bruce Lee” is a one-of-a-kind special talk as a part of Bruce Lee: Kung Fu ‧ Art ‧ Life exhibition programme. Silver Cheung, design director of Kung Fu ‧ Art ‧ Life exhibition, renowned Hong Kong film art director and vice chairman of HKFAA, shared how he designed the exhibition with an area of ​​650 square meters based on Bruce Lee’s life experience and philosophy. He also talked about his design concepts, approaches and experience.

Cheung looked at the young Bruce Lee as a film worker in his early twenties and thirties. He observed how Bruce Lee won the role and acting experience in the U.S. TV series The Green Hornet with his outstanding kung fu, returning to the spotlight that he was familiar as an actor in his childhood; how he returned to Hong Kong and won the hearts of Hong Kong people in one night by performing kung fu on a popular variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight; how he gave up his three kung fu training institutes that he arduously established in the U.S., and accepted Golden Harvest’s invitation to film in Hong Kong. Cheung felt that these important decisions reflected Bruce Lee’s persistent expectations for films.

The five films Bruce Lee starred all proved his powerful capabilities and vision as an actor, a martial artist and a director!

In the exhibition areas of the five films including The Big Boss, The Way of the Dragon, Enter the Dragon, Fist of Fury and Game of Death, Cheung presented Bruce Lee's choices of themes and stories, character designs, costume designs approaches, scene designs, his philosophy and aesthetics, and of course, his careful curating of martial arts designs.  All these elements enabled the audience to deepen their understandings of Bruce Lee and his film works.

At the end of the exhibition, Cheung designed an interactive water wall, using Bruce Lee's favourite symbol, water, to demonstrate his philosophy and spirit of martial arts.

It all started like flowers in a mirror and the moon on the water, and came to an end in the ripples.  The journey was just like an illusionary cycle.

After the exhibition tour, there was a Q&A session for more than an hour.  The two-session talk organised by HKFAA, as the eighth talk of the series of Cinema Chit-Chat, brought to a successful conclusion with a pleasant group photo.

On 1 Feb 2012, HKFAA organised a spring dinner and invited representatives from various film industry associations, as well as friends from the hair, makeup and costume sectors. It was an extraordinary opportunity for film practitioners to get together. We took these memorable pictures.

The “Hong Kong Film Arts in Full Contact” Certificate Program was conducted in Oct 2011. It was the third training course HKFAA had ever organised.

Experienced filmmakers were invited to teach basic knowledge of film arts and its scope of work.

There were 13 lectures in total for three months from 1 Oct 2011 to 24 Dec 2011. The four-hour classes were held on Saturday afternoons.

Keynote speakers included HKFAA chairman Bill Lui, vice chairman Tina Liu, and executive committee member Alex Mok. Members such as James Leung, Yank Wong, Ng Bo Ling, Shirley Chan, James Choo, Lam Chi Kiu and Wong Ying also took on a teaching role. Producer Julia Chu, directors including Joe Cheung, Ann Hui, Derek Kwok and Philip Yung, actor Gordon Lam Ka Tung, cinematographer Tam Chi Wai, props master Lam Wai Kin, and CG artist Chan Kwok Hung were invited as guest speakers.

Among the 40 participants of the “Hong Kong Film Arts in Full Contact” Certificate Program, 37 finished the course and half of them were keen to pursue their career in the film industry.  Nine participants eventually engaged in the industry, which accounts for almost 50% success rate!

In late March 2011, the performing arts sector in Hong Kong banded together and organised the “Artistes 311 Love Beyond Borders Fund Raising Campaign”, aiming at raising funds to support victims of the devastating earthquake in Japan occurred on 11 March.

HKFAA vice chairmen Raymond Li and Tina Liu, executive committee members James Cheung, and invited executive committee member Alex Mok had worked tirelessly for the campaign.

Tina Liu was appointed as the secretary-general, while Alex Mok was responsible for designing the logo, posters, T-shirts and banners of the campaign.

Tina Liu, Raymond Li, James Cheung and Alex Mok were also in charge of the RTHK press conference on the 24^th, responsible for the coordination and venue decorations.

On 1 April, HKFAA members showed their full support for the campaign held at Victoria Park. Apart from the above-mentioned four core committee members, Ben Luk and Chuk Man Yiu had also joined the team and led 50  students from the Film Professional Training Programme to work on the venue setup. Connie Auyeung and other members were on-site to provide assistance.

Hong Kong Film Arts Association sent members to teach at the 3^rd Film Professional Training Programme organised by the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers; while art director Alex Mok was also responsible for designing the course logo.

On 14 April 2010, a series of earthquake hit Yushu County, Qinghai Province in China, leaving more than 2,000 people dead and thousands of houses destroyed. Tens of thousands of people have lost their loved ones and shelters.

With the aim of providing continuous encouragement and mental support to victims in Yushu, the performing arts sector in Hong Kong once again united industry-wide efforts and organised “Artistes 414 Fund Raising Campaign”.

Apart from paying visits to victims in the disaster areas, artistes from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan also put together the “Artistes 414 Fund Raising Campaign” at Hong Kong Coliseum on 26 April as an initiative to raise funds.

As a member of the organising committee, Hong Kong Film Arts Association was responsible for the graphic design and productions of the event.

An intensive earthquake struck Sichuan on 12 May. To support the reconstruction in the area and sponsor surviving orphans, school rebuilding and educational projects, front- and back-stage workers from the performing arts sector in Hong Kong, the mainland and Taiwan teamed up to put on the “Artistes 512 Fund Raising Campaign”, making unremitting efforts to aid victims in Sichuan with post-disaster home restorations.

 “Artistes 512 Fund Raising Campaign” was held on 1 June 2008 at Pop TV Arena, where more than a hundred performing artistes, together with over a thousand backstage crew members worked hand in hand on fundraising, bringing the power of love and care to the victims in Sichuan.

Hong Kong Film Arts Association acted as the Secretary General of the organising committee, and was responsible for the graphic design and productions of the event.

Funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the “Wild Blooms of Imagination – Art Direction in Hong Kong Films 1979-2001” features the art concepts and inspirations of 64 stylistic, realism and action films since the Hong Kong New Wave, complemented by interviews of nearly a hundred art directors, film directors and cinematographers and more than a thousand pictures.

Available in both Chinese and English version, the publication is a long-prepared masterpiece compiled by Hong Kong Film Arts Association and Joint Publishing.

A massive tsunami struck South Asia at Christmas in 2004, causing numerous casualties over a wide area.

The performing arts sector in Hong Kong expressed deep sorrow for the loss of lives and sufferings, while promptly joined forces with the counterparts in Greater China to put on a seven-hour-long “Crossing Border Fund Raising Show” on 7 Jan 2005 at Hong Kong Stadium as support for the disaster-stricken areas.

Hundreds of front- and back-stage workers from local performing arts sector took part in the show, including members of Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild, Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild, Hong Kong Movie Production Executives Association, Hong Kong Screenwriters' Guild, Hong Kong Stuntman Association, Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Film Arts Association, which acted as the Secretary General of the organising committee, and was responsible for the graphic design and production of the fundraising show.

As SARS was raging in April 2003, Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild (HKPAG), under the leadership of the then-President Anita Mui, partnered with Ming Pao to initiate “Project Blossom” with the purpose of raising funds and ensuring normal education for the children of SARS victims despite tough times.

Since the Guild appropriated HK$500,000 from its charity fund as a modest spur, there had been enthusiastic supports from members of the public and media.

Following the “1:99 Concert” held on 24 May at Hong Kong Stadium and a series of fundraising activities, many more community organisations, corporations, media and the general public had made generous donations - with the total exceeding HK$22,900,000 - to support the healthy growth and development of the youth!

Hong Kong Film Arts Association was responsible for the graphic designs and productions of concert logo, posters, tickets, advertisements, uniforms, etc.

Our training program graduates of 2000 were paired up by Chairman Bill Liu with the graduates of the HK Film Directors’ Guild’s course in making 6 short films. Both groups of graduates benefited from actual filming, art and costume design and production. With the support of Metro Broadcast Corporation, these 6 short films were exhibited at the Whampao Cinema on 21/9/2000.

With the support of the Film Development Fund (FDF), overseas film and art experts, including renowned Japanese costume designer Emi Wada and the special effects makeup artist for the film Alien, were invited by HKFAA to Hong Kong for an exchange.

Financed by the Film Development Fund (FDF) of the HKSAR Government, the “Hong Kong Film Arts” VCD series were produced by the then-Chairman Bill Lui and Executive Committee Member Edith Cheung. The ten chapters cover concepts, lighting, visual effects, action coordination, interpretation, colours, textures, sets, costume designs, props, etc. A total of 100 sets of VCD were given away to tertiary institutions and libraries in Hong Kong.

Financed by the Film Development Fund (FDF) of the HKSAR Government, the 12-session class was held every Saturday from 2pm-6pm.

Participants were required to partner with students from the film directing training course organised by the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild (HKFDG) at the exit examination. Divided into six groups, HKFAA students assisted in film arts and costumes based on the six shortlisted scripts written by students from the HKFDG. Each group received $10,000 from the FDF as a subsidy for arts and costumes. The six completed short films were subsequently screened at a cinema in Whampoa.

Turnout: Out of the 60 seats, 46 students paid for the course, while 14, who had shown interest in the film industry, were referred by the Social Welfare Department and enrolled for free.

The 12-session class was held every Saturday from 2pm-6pm.
